What is a Birdie? A “birdie” is a score of one stroke better than “par” for any golf hole on the course; “par” is the normal expected score of a golf professional on any given hole.

New program is making learning fun for Birmingham children.

Camouflage, habitat and observe are just some of the big words pre-school aged children are now learning in the “Words are our World” program.
It’s designed to improve young children’s vocabulary.
“The value of every child learning to read early on is priceless,” said Anna M. Thompson with UAB’s Alys Stephens Center.
In this program children aren’t learning how to read just by looking at words on a page. They’re learning through activities like singing, dancing, and painting.
The new program is thanks to a grant from PNC Foundation. People from UAB’s Alys Stephens Center and the McWane Science Center are running the classes.
“Because we know that kids that learn to read early on and learn to read well do so much better in school,” said Thompson.
Andre Bryant said, “I think anytime you can take something that could potentially be boring and add an element of fun or interest to it it’s going to make it stick.”
Bryant’s daughter Clara is in the program and loving it. “She’s a singing dancing fool, she smiles, she laughs,” said Bryant.
And parents are loving watching their children enjoy learning. Laquetta Danzy said her daughter Faith, “doesn’t put a book down and interacting and loving the library and loving being in this setting with education we’re ready for scholarships.”
If you want to get your child involved with the new program call UAB’s Alys Stephens Center and ask for someone in the education program.
It’s free all you have to do is sign up and show up.
